There are many problems associated in using a conventional universal remote to control a home theater.  A home theater generally consists of many A/V components such as TV, Receivers and DVD players. These components all need to be switched on and configured so that their correct inputs are selected for the requested activity. What is required is a sequence of commands to be issued by the remote, (this is called a macro). Most remotes work by shining a coded infra red, (IR), light

beam.  All your components have a receiver window that is constantly looking for IR commands. This works fine for individual commands, but when a macro is transmitted it takes a longer time to complete the whole sequence. If anything disrupts the IR during the macro the system will not get configured correctly for the

activity. Disruptions occur due to events such as people walking in front of the remote or when the remote is not held pointing at the components but put down before the completion of the macro. Then once there has been an error, the equipment can get out of step for all future commands. It just makes you want to cry!
